PERSONALITY
Zidane's a really nice guy—a genuine one. When a person is down or in trouble, Zidane can't help but to assist, to offer a shoulder to cry on, or for young Black Mages like Vivi Ornitier, a big brother figure. That's just the kind of guy he is—Zidane's just really kind and down to earth; if you're feeling down, Zidane will try to keep your spirits up, make you smile, and won't try to let you open up unless you do it first. His reasons for helping people is well, pretty non-existent; he helps others because he can and will and it doesn't really feel right when he abandons those in need ("You don't need a reason to help people."). In fact, if you compare him to the previous protagonists of the two Final Fantasy games on the playstation, Zidane's a breath of fresh air: he has none of Cloud's or Squall's surliness and is optimistic, warm, compassionate, and enjoys meeting new people and places.

But of course, he's not all smiles and laughs; for all of Zidane's support and advice to all his friends in the game, he doesn't exactly let them in to his own set of problems. He harbors his own set of insecurities and doubts—most common is his origin. Ever since he was little, he wanted to know more about his family and the place he was born. Once, he left Tantalus to find that place, only to return to the gang, his search in vain. As such, he can relate to Vivi's own doubts of his origins and sense of belonging, as he too, carries them. And when Dagger ascends the throne, he becomes a hot mess—he drinks, he becomes sullen, but of course, why shouldn't he? He's fallen for a girl who he can't reach as he's a commoner and she's royalty.

Zidane is also a shameless skirt-chaser. He has, on several occasions, hit on women his age or older (not just Dagger, but Lani and the barmaid at Lindblum). In fact, most of the characters comment on his...er, flirting, which... really happens a lot, until the third disc, in which he realizes Dagger is an important person to him and quite frankly, he's fallen in love with her.

Also, he is a thief. Zidane may be the game's protagonist and all, but he's not really a goody two-shoes character. After all, Tantalus is not just a theatre troupe—it's also a group of professional thieves who cover up their activities with performances. He also swears (arguably not as much as Barret or Cid Highwind, but still swears), scratches his butt on occasion, makes tactless comments (especially with Regent Cid, which are pretty funny considering the guy has been turned into an oglop then a frog before restored to his human self), is not afraid to insult anyone he doesn't like or gets along with (but for his friends, he throws insults at them in a friendly banter sort of way—like how he calls Freya "rat-face" and pretended he doesn't remember her), and well, he did pee outside Eiko's house with Vivi. So yes, he's a nice enough guy, but don't be surprised if he ends up stealing from you—he'll return it, eventually. (Or give him a deadline.)
